DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY

In this class, students will learn how to build an artistic practice in the field of photography. The class will focus on the basics of composition, exposure, color theory, photo sequencing, as well as dive into the history of photographic image. It is designed to explore the aesthetics and techniques of photography so students can better understand not only how to create stronger images but also how to study and analyze them.

When and where: Mondays 4:30-6pm (with optional additional studio hours from 6-6:30pm) and either Tuesdays 4:30-6pm (Group A) or Wednesdays 4:30-6pm (Group B), at 450 Guerrero St.


DESIGN STUDIO

Design Studio will teach the tools and skills to design and construct real world products and structures. You will work, individually and as a class, to apply design-thinking to real world issues. We will work as a studio to share, curate and critique as daily practices. Students will design, develop build models addressing a real-world problem. Students receive a $140 stipend (per semester) for participation for the duration of the school year.

With successful completion of the Architecture Firm and Design Studio programs during each session, youth will receive 5 SFUSD Credits because the classes are co-taught by an SFUSD teacher. *Instructor approval required.

FASHION DESIGN

Design and sew your own original fashion pieces + clothing. Learn to use sewing machines, hand stitch, and work with different fabrics and dyes.

PRINTMAKING

Learn various drawing, painting and printmaking techniques including block printing and screen printing and how these flat art forms can easily shift dimensions. Learning sustainable processes that involve using household items and scraps. Create your own graphics to print on various materials.

MUSIC PRODUCTION + ILLUSTRATION

Work with professional Digital Audio Work Station (DAW) Ableton Live software and professional audio production equipment to make your own music, create beats, record and put out your projects on SoundCloud.

Learn how to illustrate figures and comic books. Understand anatomy and illustrate powerful scenes and characters with flare! Together, you'll discover the fundamentals and pictorial vocabulary to dominate the situation. Perfectionism is not our goal but rather the application of confidence in your work. Sharpening your perception and using your emotions for the ultimate result! Topics: Narratives Writing, Figure Drawing, and Comics.

ADVANCED ARCHITECTURE FIRM*

Over the course of two semesters, the Arch Firm class designs and constructs projects that positively impact local communities in San Francisco. You will come up with concepts individually and as a class using a variety of design tools such as sketching, hand drawing, physical model making, and 3D computer modeling. Neighborhood members and organizations offer input for the designs, and then the concept is built by the class. Past projects have included parklets, sidewalk furniture, and public pavilions.

The class is taught by a licensed architect and a licensed contractor. Students receive an $600 stipend for participating in the Advanced Architecture Firm for the duration of the school year ($300 per semester). We will begin accepting new applications for the Advanced Architecture Firm in the Fall of 2022.

PUBLIC ART INTERNSHIP (ARCHITECTURE + GRAPHIC ARTS)

From Fall 2021 session to early Spring 2022 session, students in the public art internship will work collaboratively on designing the metal gate at the entrance of a local affordable housing development in the Mission, 681 Florida St. On the ground floor of this development is the future home for Carnaval San Francisco. Design and realize projects in San Francisco like a professional artist/architect. You will come up with concepts individually and as a class, have experts review your designs, and build them for clients. Students will learn to work with design programs, designing panels, running test laser-cuts, and selecting finishes/colors, and coordinating with metal fabricator.
