Join Youth Art Exchange for the 2nd annual Diaspora show as we celebrate Black art at [x]space on March 28 from 11am-1pm. There will be a free metalsmithing workshop with Karen Smith.
Karen Smith — Oakland-based metalsmith, jewelry maker, and founder of We Wield the Hammer (WWTH)— will be leading a metalworking workshop followed by a Q+A.
Please RSVP to guarantee a spot. Free and open to the public, materials provided.
Karen Smith's work looks to empower young women of African descent, “offering an opportunity for artistic equity, economic empowerment and access to a vocation which is, worldwide, traditionally unavailable to women."
Karen Smith, who founded WWTH, is a self-taught metalsmith. A longtime Oakland resident, she was inspired to start WWTH after a short apprenticeship in Dakar, Senegal in 2018. Her mission is to bring this vocation to women and girls of African descent around the globe.
