Youth Art Exchange has offered arts programs to San Francisco public high school artists for over 20 years. Starting in 2021 we are offering paid art classes to support our free arts programs for youth. By participating in this class you will be learning how to draw and screenprint your own designs while supporting youth artists! No experience necessary, and all materials are included.
These classes will meet in person at our youth and community arts hub, [x]space, at 5137 Mission in the Excelsior on Thursdays in July from 6pm-8pm.
July 8th and July 15th: Drawing
$175 for instruction and $20 for art supplies
July 22nd and July 29th: Screenprinting
$175 for instruction and $40 for art supplies
Sign up for both sets of classes together for $390 and save $20! You will use what you learned in the drawing classes to create your designs for your screenprints.
Do you live in the Excelsior? Use 94112love for $15 off
Alyssa Aviles is Youth Art Exchange (YAX)'s faculty printmaking artist. She teaches Printmaking after school and in school at Leadership High School.
Alyssa is a Xicana artist and arts educator in San Francisco, California. She was born and raised in the city’s Mission District, a place whose spiritual geography has influenced much of her work and career. Alyssa received a BFA in Printmaking from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Alyssa began a women’s printmaking collective by the name of Suavecita Press. In this collective, women are invited to learn and collaborate as printmakers. This collective currently operates out of the Mission Gráfica printmaking studio of the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, where Alyssa also gives silkscreening classes and assists as a studio manager. Aside from teaching, Alyssa also works as a freelance artist and operates the line of merchandise that Suavecita Press currently offers.

This event supports Youth Art Exchange's [x]space arts hub. [x]space is an interactive art making and exhibition space accessible to youth and community members of all ages. The “x” in [x]space is related to exchange, experimentation, Excelsior, and x as a variable. Visit us at the heart of the Excelsior at 5137 Mission Street, at Mission & Geneva.
Transformed from a meat market (Chuck’s Market) that was shuttered for nearly a decade, this space is focused on creative exchange between artists and community. It is an active arts center by Youth Art Exchange with free classes and programming for San Francisco public high school students, workshops, a youth printshop, an art gallery, community meeting space, and venue rentals.
