October News

YAX classes are in full swing! Here’s a peak of what they’re up to: our beginning architecture students are learning principles of design and building. YAX architecture firm students are in the final stages of parklet building and aiming for an install at John O’Connell High School within the month. For inspiration and a glimpse into the many options and possibilities of film photography, our photographers recently visited Glass Key Photo. Our filmmakers have jumped from learning the basics of camera operation to filming in class and on the streets. YAX fashion designers took a trip to Dior to spark ideas for the clothing and accessories lines they’ll be working on this Fall. Students in our Music Production class are making samples and beats in Ableton Live. YAX printmakers have been busy in the study and recently visited the Ocean Ave corridor to scope out possibilities for an upcoming public art project. We’re excited to share the progress that they all make on their creative paths for the next few months!

Special shout out to the alumni and parents who have joined our Back to School campaign! Your gifts to our programs are especially meaningful because they come from those that know our work firsthand. We emphasize free programming for public high school youth in San Francisco and are only able to make this happen through the generosity of people like you. Please consider giving during the last week of this campaign to provide more opportunities for our incredible, artistic youth. Your one-time or recurring monthly donation helps us continue to thrive.

One of YAX’s core missions is to promote artistic growth and offer exposure through professional opportunities and experiences – for YAX youth, faculty, and staff. For youth, we provide platforms for exhibition and performance throughout the year and offer paid positions as interns, teaching assistants, and advisory board members. Here are few upcoming opportunities with YAX:

Join Youth Art Exchange’s Youth Advisory Board! The Youth Art Exchange Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a group of high school students who help create, lead, and support the programs at Youth Art Exchange. YAB members select faculty members, evaluate programs, write youth-centered grants, plan events, and provide the youth perspective to our work. YAB members serve for the school year (September – June) and are paid a stipend in the Fall and Spring. If you’re a currently enrolled student at YAX and interested in joining YAB, reach out to shanna@youthartexchange.org

Young filmmakers from around the Bay: we want to see your work on the big screen at SOMArts for the Film Festival at the San Francisco Youth Arts Summit! The Film Festival is a curated selection of short films by young filmmakers (ages 14–20) – a panel of judges will award prizes to favorite films. YAX is accepting submissions of film and video work through Nov 17; learn more and apply here!

OCTOBER 15: Youth Art Exchange ventures to SFMOMA! Each Fall, we plan an outing for YAX youth, faculty, staff, parents, and supporters to spend some time exploring in the rich creative landscape of San Francisco. This time, we’re headed to the SFMOMA for an engaging arts scavenger hunt, followed by lunch in Yerba Buena Gardens. Friends of YAX are invited to join us at a discounted ticket rate – contact info@youthartexchange.org for more information.

NOVEMBER 8: Join YAX at SCENE LOCAL, presented by the Northern California Chapter of the International Interior Design Association. IIDA has teamed up Northern California based artists, fabricators and manufacturers with local design firms, construction companies, and event partners to create a series of curated scenes for you to explore! Through our partnership with IIDA, YAX will be at Scene Local with a photobooth, live printmaking, tote bags designed in collaboration with YAX, IIDA, and you – proceeds from tote bag and print sales benefit YAX programming. If you’re a parent, volunteer, or student of YAX and would like to be our guest, email us info@youthartexchange.org. Tickets for the general public are available here.

DECEMBER 1–2: The 7th Annual San Francisco Youth Arts Summit returns to SOMArts! Youth Art Exchange and dozens of arts organizations from across the San Francisco Bay Area will present a two-day celebration of young artists using creativity to amplify their voices and power. On Friday, December 1, SOMArts and YAX hosts a gallery preview, happy hour, and the second annual Youth Arts Summit Film Festival. On Saturday, December 2, the gallery will come alive with dozens of exhibits showcasing the work of youth from around The Bay, interactive activities and art making, food and drink, photobooths, live music and DJs, and a performance competition. RSVP here and visit the SFYAS page for more info.
