February News

This February at Youth Art Exchange, we’ll be welcoming our spring cohort (classes start Feb 9th!), celebrating public art projects designed and built by youth, in partnership with Farley’s Coffee in Emeryville, John O’Connell High School, the Department of Public Play, KaBOOM! and the 50Fund.

YAX’s free spring classes start in one week! We’re currently accepting applications for the following programs:

Advanced Photography and Introduction to Architecture are currently full and require instructor’s approval.

To enroll, stop by our office (29 Howth St) or fill out an application online.

YAX and John O’Connell High School are partnering with the Department of Public Play on a special project, supported by the 50 Fund and KaBOOM!. Their goal is to transform sidewalks into play spaces with small-scale public infrastructure that invites children of all ages to climb, swing, balance, and play on street furniture. They’re currently fabricating a bicycle rack that tweaks the ubiquitous ‘U’-type pipe rack into a fun, colorful play structure. The complete structure will be installed in March.

Join us on Friday, February 5th at 3:00pm, John O’Connell High School (2355 Folsom Street), for a ribbon cutting of the prototype. RSVP on Facebook.

On the last two Saturdays, YAX and Farley’s Coffee have partnered on our first East Bay Parklet at Farley’s on 65th. Youth from San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley are designing and building Emeryville’s first parklet–to be installed later this spring. Stay tuned for more news as the design develops and how YOU can help support this innovative cross-bay collaboration!

Join Youth Art Exchange for a Spring Break Happy as we toast to art, educators, and the youth that inspire and sustain our work. Enjoy drink specials, interactive printmaking, the unveiling of our new bicycle-powered art cart/gallery, and more! Your RSVP enters you into a prize drawing for original artwork, art supplies, treats, and YAX swag–learn more and RSVP here.
